The caves were formed by geological processes shaping the Niagara Escarpment for hundreds of millions of years. Walking through them is a live geology lesson covering dolostone formations from ancient tropical seas, glacial movement, and fossil hunting.
Craigleith Provincial Park Fossil Hunting
The shale beach contains fossils of marine organisms from hundreds of millions of years ago. Walk slowly along the waterline examining flat pieces of shale for brachiopods, bryozoans, and crinoids. Fossils can be collected from the beach but not from rock faces.
The Niagara Escarpment UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve
Hiking any Bruce Trail section provides opportunities to discuss ecosystems, conservation, the formation of the Escarpment, and endangered species.
Maritime and Local History
Collingwood Museum
Tells the story of the town's shipbuilding heritage with ship models, tools, photographs, and interactive displays. Duration: 1 to 2 hours.
Nancy Island Historic Site (Wasaga Beach)
The story of the HMS Nancy, a British supply ship during the War of 1812. Museum with artifacts, the recovered hull, and military history exhibits.
