Art Retreat Chalets near Thornbury and Collingwood, Ontario

Arrival day. Check-in opens at 4:00 pm. The instructor takes a main-floor queen at Corona or Aurora, and the first evening is a sketchbook session at the dining table while dinner cooks. Book the chalet on its own calendar, for instance Corona’s.

Gallery day. Collingwood first: Tremont Studios opens working artist studios on the second floor of the Tremont building, and the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts runs an Art Shop and a calendar of workshops, both 15 minutes away. After lunch, Thornbury, 20 minutes: Loft Gallery shows landscape painting and has resident artists working on site, and the Gallery at L.E. Shore holds changing exhibitions in the library. Call ahead if meeting a particular artist is the point.

Plein-air day. The shale shoreline at Craigleith Provincial Park is 10 minutes away; the Epping–John Muir Lookout above the Beaver Valley, a short walk from its parking, is 35; Old Baldy is 40. Departure. The chalet is vacated by 11:00 am, so the closing critique happens over breakfast.

The chalets are furnished homes, and the lease asks guests to maintain the property’s condition; the security deposit is released only when there is no damage. Plan the medium around that. Watercolour, pencil, ink and pastel suit the dining table under a drop cloth. Wet, messy work belongs on the balcony or in the garden, both listed at every cluster chalet. Oils and solvent-based cleaners indoors are a question to ask before booking, not after. Rinse water goes down a sink, never into the hot tub, and brushes stay out of the dishwasher.

The cluster chalets put the living floor at the top of the house, where the windows and balcony look toward the ski hill and the golf course; that upper floor is the natural place to set up easels. Aqua Villa faces Georgian Bay instead, with dining for eight and three queen rooms, which suits a small advanced class painting water. An art society of 20 to 28 takes two cluster chalets side by side, such as Luna and Prima, each with a kitchen island and a steam room for stiff shoulders after a day at the easel.

For a lighter session, Crock A Doodle in Blue Mountain Village, a 5-minute drive, paints pottery that is glazed and fired afterwards and is usually ready after 4 p.m. the next day; groups of nine or more call the studio to reserve. The Paint Bar in Collingwood, 15 minutes away, runs pottery painting and other projects, with fired pieces normally ready within seven days or shipped. Butter Gallery in Collingwood arranges private evenings with an artist discussion through the gallery.
