Buffalo to Blue Mountain: the border, the QEW and the toll question

A Western New York group books on the ski chalets page, then plans the crossing. After the border, the routing measured from Buffalo City Hall runs about 99 kilometres on the QEW and about 22 kilometres on the 407 ETR, which is a toll road, then Highways 403 and 410 and a long run north on regional roads to Highway 26 and a final county stretch. The total is about 272 kilometres and three hours fifty minutes before traffic and stops, with the border wait on top. Set the app to avoid tolls if the group would rather skip the 407 ETR, and expect a different time.

Crossing from Buffalo: documents for everyone in the car

Every traveller needs accepted identity and citizenship documents, children included. The Canada Border Services Agency asks adults travelling with a minor to carry the child’s identification and, when a parent who shares custody is not travelling, a consent letter, ideally notarized to avoid delays. The return into the United States has its own document rules, so check both lists. The agency publishes estimated wait times for the busiest land crossings, including the Peace Bridge and the Lewiston–Queenston Bridge; look before leaving rather than guessing. The guide for American visitors covers payment and phones.

Timing a Buffalo Friday so the group makes check-in

Check-in is from 4:00 pm. A group leaving Buffalo around 10:30 a.m., with a lunch stop and an ordinary crossing, arrives near check-in; a Friday-evening start arrives late, which is fine for a hot tub and bed but hard on the driver. Check-out is 11:00 am, so the drive home starts before noon with time for the border. Blue Mountain from Buffalo and Western New York makes the wider case for the trip. Plan a grocery stop on the Ontario side so the first dinner is cooked at the chalet.

Choosing a cluster chalet for a Buffalo group

Ten skiers fit Vista; twelve fit Stella; thirteen fit Omega or Vega; fourteen fit Aurora, Corona, Luna or Prima. Corona and Stella have a private dry sauna and Luna and Prima a steam room. A group bringing a dog should check the rules for taking pets across the border in both directions before leaving; at the chalets, one dog is standard with a pet fee. Each chalet allows four vehicles, and two adjacent chalets give a group of 20 to 28 its own houses on one property; see two chalets for bigger groups.
