Kolapore in winter: backcountry skiing only

A Nordic club books its chalet on the ski chalets page and its day on Kolapore Wilderness Trails, about 25 minutes from the cluster by the verified route. The trail association is clear about winter: the trails are for cross-country skiing only, with no walking, snowshoeing or biking, and dogs stay home. They are backcountry trails and they are not groomed. Kolapore itself is about 21 kilometres and 24 minutes from 104 Brooker Boulevard on the measured route, before traffic and stops. The association places the network on the Niagara Escarpment in The Blue Mountains, about 20 kilometres southwest of Collingwood.

Choosing the Kolapore trailhead for the group’s skill

The main trailhead on Grey Road 2 has a plowed lot that is often full on weekends, and it leads to the more challenging winter trails. The association points less experienced skiers and riders to the paved lot at the corner of Grey Road 2 and the Osprey–Blue Mountains Townline. Split a mixed group by trailhead before leaving the chalet; the verified route ends at the main lot, so the townline party navigates separately. Volunteers maintain about 50 kilometres of marked trails with no government support, paid for by memberships, donations and map sales, so buy the map.

Summer at Kolapore: mountain biking and hiking

In summer the same network opens to mountain biking and hiking, and some trails close seasonally for environmental protection; check before riding a route you knew last year. For a second day on foot, Loree Forest connects paths across several landholdings including the Bruce Trail, with paid Town parking on 21st Sideroad, also about 25 minutes from the cluster. Metcalfe Rock on 10th Line suits an escarpment walk, with climbing only through an outfitter. Summer riders and hikers use the same two trailheads, and the townline lot is again the gentler start.

After a Kolapore ski day: sauna, steam and the hot tub

Backcountry skiing is cold work, which is the case for the sauna chalets. Corona and Stella each have a private dry sauna; Luna and Prima each have a private steam room; Corona and Luna also have two gas fireplaces. Every chalet has a private year-round hot tub and four parking spaces, enough for a club arriving in separate cars. A group of 20 to 28 books two of these side by side, and check-in from 4:00 pm leaves arrival day free for an afternoon on the trails first. Dogs stay home on a winter Kolapore day, but they are welcome at the chalets with the pet fee.
