How many writers fit a retreat chalet, one room each?

Writers book differently from ski groups. The licensed maximum matters less than the number of doors that close, because the point of the trip is a room per person. Vista and 44L each have four bedrooms, so four writers get a room of their own; Stella and Omega have five. A group of eight or ten books two four- or five-bedroom chalets rather than one large one. Reserve each chalet on its live calendar, for example Vista’s or 44L’s.

Not every room is equal. In the cluster, queen rooms are on the main level and the lower level holds the bunk rooms; Vista’s fourth bedroom and Stella’s fifth have two single beds rather than bunks, which suits a writer who wants a bed and a clear corner. A partner who comes along shares a queen without taking a writer’s room.

Where writers work during the day at the retreat chalet

Writing surfaces are the honest constraint, since the bedrooms are listed by their beds, not their desks. The shared surfaces are the dining table and the kitchen island upstairs: Omega, Stella, Corona, Luna and Prima list dining for ten and Aurora seating for ten, while Corona, Luna, Prima and 44L list a kitchen island. A rule many groups adopt is silent mornings at the table, then afternoons apart. Free Wi-Fi is in every chalet; whether to switch it on before lunch is the group’s decision.

The noise by-law of the Town of The Blue Mountains applies at all hours and to every neighbour, which helps a retreat as much as it restricts one. For an off-site desk, Collingwood Public Library is a 15-minute drive and offers visitor membership to those who bring identification for their home address and their temporary local one.

Research trips and walks for a writers’ retreat

  • Archives: the Craigleith Heritage Depot, 10 minutes away, combines a museum, archives and library in a former railway station; archive research is by appointment.
  • A library gallery: the Gallery at L.E. Shore, a single-room exhibition space inside Thornbury’s library, 20 minutes away; call ahead, because programmes can use the room.
  • Local history: Collingwood Museum, 15 minutes, and Sheffield Park Black History Museum in Clarksburg, 20, which preserves the history of Black pioneers and communities in Grey and Simcoe counties.
  • Thinking walks: the Georgian Bay shore at Craigleith Provincial Park, 10 minutes, or the paths of Loree Forest that join the Bruce Trail, 25.

Booking dates and a closing reading for the writers’ retreat

Two nights is the minimum; a manuscript week is simply a longer booking on the same calendar. Many writing groups prefer weekdays, and midweek chalet rentals cover that pattern. Writers arrive from 4:00 pm and leave by 11:00 am. A closing reading by the gas fireplace is a good finish, but the audience is the group itself: day visitors are not permitted, so a local writer cannot drop by for the evening unless they stay. For a working trip built around a laptop rather than a manuscript, see the Blue Mountain workation guide.

Writers’ retreats: frequently asked questions

Can each writer have a private bedroom at the retreat?

Yes, if the group books by bedroom count: four writers per four-bedroom chalet and five per five-bedroom chalet. Partners can share a queen without taking a writer’s room.

Do the writers’ retreat chalets have desks?

Desks are not listed. The work surfaces are the upper-floor dining table, which seats ten in six chalets, and the kitchen island in Corona, Luna, Prima and 44L.

Is there somewhere to research local history near the chalets?

The Craigleith Heritage Depot, about 10 minutes away, has a museum, archives and library; book archive research by appointment.

Can a local author visit the retreat for an evening reading?

Not at the chalet. Only registered overnight guests are allowed on the property, so meet a visiting author in town or book them a room.
