The McDonald’s Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular is a ten-day Georgian Bay fishing derby run by the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association. The 2026 derby ran from 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 28 to noon on Sunday, September 6, with salmon and rainbow, brown and lake trout eligible and daily random prizes for men, women and anglers 17 and under. Every fish is weighed in Owen Sound, about an hour from the chalets, so the stay suits crews fishing a few days of the derby.
Reading the Salmon Spectacular rules before the crew books
A crew looking at chalets for fishing groups should read the derby rules first, because they decide where you fish and when you drive. Rule 8 sets the boundary: Georgian Bay waters out to Cabot Head, with the eastern limit drawn north from Delphi Point and the mouth of the Beaver River named among the limits. So some water off The Blue Mountains appears to fall inside the derby area; check the boundary map in the derby guide before relying on it.
Fish must be whole, not gutted, and never previously frozen, and salmon and trout need to weigh at least 3 pounds. Everyone in a boat must hold a valid ticket, and a ticket bought during the derby only becomes valid the next day.
Owen Sound weigh-ins and the drive from Blue Mountain
Fish are weighed only at the official station at Georgian Shores Marina, open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and closing at noon on the last day. Our drive-time check puts Owen Sound City Hall about 62 minutes from 104 Brooker Boulevard, before traffic and stops, so a contending fish caught near Thornbury still has to make the trip west to be weighed.
For a closer harbour, Meaford Harbour is about 35 minutes from the chalets. In 2026 the Meaford Salmon & Trout Derby overlapped the first days of the Spectacular.
What a Salmon Spectacular crew needs from the chalet
Corona, Stella, Luna, Prima and 44L list a freezer, useful for fish after weigh-in; ask about space before arriving with a catch, and ask too about cleaning fish on the property. Parking is limited to four vehicles per chalet, so raise a boat trailer before booking. Each kitchen and propane barbecue suits early starts and late dinners, and the noise bylaw applies at every hour.
The 2026 derby ended on the Sunday of the Labour Day weekend, which makes our Labour Day chalets a natural fit for the final days.
