Blue Mountain or The Blue Mountains — what’s the difference?

Blue Mountain is the mountain — the stretch of the Niagara Escarpment above Georgian Bay — and, in everyday use, the resort that operates the ski hill and summer attractions on it. Blue Mountain Village is the compact pedestrian village of shops, restaurants and suites the resort built at the base; it is a place you walk around, not a municipality. The Blue Mountains, with the article and the plural, is the Town: a rural municipality in Grey County that runs from the Collingwood boundary west along the bay through Craigleith to Thornbury and Clarksburg and up into the Beaver Valley. The Town took its current form when the old Town of Thornbury and Collingwood Township amalgamated at the start of the 2000s, which is why older maps and addresses can be confusing.

Collingwood is the neighbouring town, in Simcoe County, about 11 kilometres east of the resort — a separate municipality with its own downtown, harbour and hospital. People say “Collingwood” loosely for the whole area (and search for it that way), so plenty of “Collingwood chalets” are actually in The Blue Mountains, ours included. Two reasons. First, address and licensing: short-term rentals in The Blue Mountains are licensed by the Town under its own by-law (every chalet page shows its STR licence number), and the Town’s rules — including occupancy limits and noise hours — apply to your stay. Second, the “Blue Mountain” search problem: there are Blue Mountains in Pennsylvania, Australia and elsewhere, so listings and articles get mixed up online; if a page does not say Ontario, Collingwood or The Blue Mountains, it may not be about this one.
