Short answer
Blue Mountain is about 325 kilometres from downtown Sudbury, roughly four hours and forty minutes of driving before traffic, weather and stops. The computed route comes south on Highway 69 and Highway 400, then crosses to the Georgian Bay shore through Wasaga Beach. That is a full travel day, so Sudbury families usually plan a week, often over March Break, from the March Break chalet rentals page.

Sudbury to the Blue Mountain chalets: the route south

Our routing estimate runs from Tom Davies Square to 104 Brooker Boulevard: 324.5 kilometres and 277 minutes with no traffic. Highway 69 carries the northern half, Highway 400 the middle, and the last hour leaves the 400 for county roads through Wasaga Beach and along the bay to the Blue Mountains.

Winter conditions on Highway 69 and near Georgian Bay can add a great deal to that time. Plan for daylight driving where you can, check provincial road reports in the morning, and read our guide to Georgian Bay snow squalls before a January or February trip.

Why Sudbury families plan March Break at Blue Mountain

Ontario's 2027 March Break runs from Monday, March 15 to Friday, March 19. Blue Mountain's lift season usually runs to around mid-April, so the break normally falls inside it, with the exact closing day set by conditions. A Saturday-to-Saturday chalet week turns two long driving days into bookends for six days on the hill, in the Village or at the indoor attractions.

March Break draws families from across the province. Our answer on how far in advance to book explains why families from far away should reserve early, and the March Break family guide plans the week itself.

Choosing a chalet base after a long drive from Sudbury

After almost five hours in the car, a base where nobody needs to drive again is worth a lot. The eight Mountain-cluster chalets on Brooker Boulevard are a ten-minute walk from Blue Mountain Village. Two Sudbury families travelling together can book side-by-side chalets, each with its own kitchen and private hot tub, and still share meals.

Groceries are easiest in Collingwood, about fifteen minutes before the chalets on the way in. Each chalet parks four vehicles.

Related questions

Does the route from Sudbury pass through Barrie?

Not on the fastest computed line. It leaves Highway 400 for Simcoe County roads and reaches the bay at Wasaga Beach, so downtown Barrie is not on the way.

When is March Break 2027?

Monday, March 15 to Friday, March 19, 2027, according to the Ontario school-year calendar.

Is a weekend stay worth it from Sudbury?

It is a lot of driving for two nights. Three nights is the shortest stay that leaves real time on the hill once the drive is done.

Where can a Sudbury group stop on the way down?

The computed route stays on Highway 69 and Highway 400 for most of the trip, so the service centres and towns along those highways are the natural places to break the drive.
