How Georgian Bay fits into Lake Huron
The Georgian Bay Biosphere, a UNESCO biosphere region on the bay's eastern shore, describes "this part of Lake Huron" as holding the largest collection of freshwater islands in the world, known locally as the 30,000 Islands. Its region stretches about 200 kilometres from the Severn River to the French River.
On the western side, the Bruce Peninsula separates the bay from the main body of the lake. Parks Canada describes the Niagara Escarpment's cliffs plunging into the blue waters of Georgian Bay at Bruce Peninsula National Park, while Sauble Beach, on the peninsula's other side, faces Lake Huron itself. Our answer on the drive to Sauble Beach covers that trip.
The southern Georgian Bay shore at Blue Mountain and Collingwood
Blue Mountain looks north over the southern end of Georgian Bay. The stretch of water off Collingwood is Nottawasaga Bay; from Millennium Park at the end of Heritage Drive you look across Collingwood Harbour and Nottawasaga Bay toward Blue Mountain. Every Blue View chalet is within a few minutes' drive of this shoreline.
Because it is fresh water, you can swim, paddle and fish here without salt; our answer on swimming in Georgian Bay covers the season and water conditions, and our guide to kayaking and paddleboarding lists launch points.
Staying on Georgian Bay with Blue View
Aqua Villa, at 209555 Highway 26, is Blue View's waterfront home: four bedrooms for ten guests, a private hot tub on a balcony facing the bay, an indoor steam shower and sauna, and a sandy public beach steps away. It is a five-minute drive from Blue Mountain Village.
The eight Mountain-cluster chalets on Brooker Boulevard sit inland, a short drive from the shore and a ten-minute walk from the Village. Our Mountain cluster and Aqua Villa answer explains the trade-off between the two bases.
