Blue Mountain in October: The Colour Month

By the Blue View Chalets Team · Published: August 19, 2026 · 7 min read

October is the month the escarpment performs. The maple forests that make this stretch of the Niagara Escarpment famous turn red and gold, usually peaking from the end of September into mid-October — our answer on when the colours peak tracks the timing — and for a few weeks the entire region reorganizes itself around looking at trees. Deservedly.

The colour, and how to see it

Three ways, in rising order of effort. Drive: the fall-colour drives thread the best of the valley and shoreline routes into afternoons. Walk: fall hiking on the Bruce Trail puts you inside the canopy rather than beside it. Stay put: the cluster chalets sit at the base of the escarpment, so a certain amount of world-class leaf viewing happens from the hot tub. All three are correct.

Thanksgiving anchors the month

The second Monday of October is Canadian Thanksgiving, and it typically lands at or near peak colour — which makes it simultaneously the month's busiest weekend and its most beautiful. Families take the full three nights, kitchens run hard, and the Thanksgiving rentals page exists precisely for that weekend's logistics. If you are not tied to the holiday, the weekends either side of it offer nearly the same forest with noticeably more room.

Apples, markets, and the harvest core

October is the heart of apple country's season. The orchards and farm stands mapped in our apple-picking guide and along the Apple Pie Trail are at full harvest, and the month's simplest great afternoon is still a backroads loop with a paper bag of Honeycrisps riding shotgun.

What October is not

It is not beach season (the bay has gone cold), not ski season (that anticipation belongs to the weeks ahead), and after mid-month, not reliably mild — late October turns raw, and the colour comes down with the first hard winds. The month rewards the front half. Pack layers and rain shells either way; the packing list has the fall column.

Booking October

Thanksgiving behaves like a holiday: early booking, three-night pattern, family demand. Colour-peak weekends around it draw couples and hiking groups, so October weekends generally deserve more booking lead than their shoulder-season reputation suggests. Late October flips to genuine value. Dates for all ten chalets are on the booking page — and every chalet's year-round hot tub was built for exactly this month's evenings.
