Where to Stay in Collingwood, Ontario: The Areas Mapped

You are organizing a group trip "to Collingwood" (a family reunion, a friends' weekend, a team tournament), and the first decision is the area, not the house. Most people use the name for the whole southern Georgian Bay corner: the Town of Collingwood itself and the Town of The Blue Mountains next door, where the ski resort sits. All ten Blue View chalets are on The Blue Mountains side, about 15 minutes by car from downtown Collingwood, and a group books them from the Collingwood chalet rentals page. This guide maps the areas a visitor can base in, what each one is like, and where a group house fits.

Distances below are road estimates from the chalet bases, rounded up to five minutes, before traffic, parking and stops.

Downtown Collingwood: staying near Hurontario Street and the harbour

Downtown is the heritage main street, Hurontario Street, with the harbour a short walk north. The restaurants are the draw: Tesoro on Schoolhouse Lane, Poppy's French Bistro in the Tremont building on Simcoe Street, Prime Seven Nine with its private room in a former bank vault, and The Huron Club pub on Pine Street. The Gayety Theatre presents concerts and live theatre, and the Collingwood Museum on St. Paul Street opens Tuesday to Saturday. At the water, Millennium Park at the end of Heritage Drive looks back across the harbour toward Blue Mountain.

A downtown base suits a visit built around evenings in town. Blue View has no house downtown; from the eight cluster chalets the Collingwood Museum is 9.1 km, about 15 minutes, which is the drive a chalet group makes for a dinner out. Our downtown Collingwood guide covers the shops and galleries in more depth.

West Collingwood and Mountain Road for event weekends

Between downtown and the ski hill sit most of the places a visiting team or wedding party needs. On the west side of town, the Georgian Bay Hotel hosts weddings 4.9 km from the cluster, about 10 minutes. Mountain Road, the road toward the hill, has Side Launch Brewing's taproom at 6.5 km and Galaxy Cinemas at 7.4 km, the obvious rainy-afternoon plan. Collingwood's sports venues are a similar drive: Eddie Bush Memorial Arena is 9.1 km, the Centennial Aquatic Centre 8.1 km and Fisher Field 7.1 km, about 15 minutes each.

This is where a chalet base works well for an event weekend: close enough to make an early game or a ceremony on time, and far enough out that the evening ends at the group's own table.

The Craigleith shore on Highway 26, Collingwood's beach side

West of Collingwood, Highway 26 runs between the escarpment and the bay through Craigleith, which is part of The Blue Mountains. This is the beach side of the area. The Town's Northwinds Beach is sandy, with a playground and washrooms; Craigleith Provincial Park has a shale shore and a picnic shelter; and the flat Georgian Trail runs along the old rail line toward Collingwood. Blue View's Aqua Villa is here, on Georgian Bay at 209555 Highway 26, 0.5 km by road from Northwinds Beach and 10.7 km from the Collingwood Museum. It sleeps 10, with four bathrooms and a hot tub on the balcony facing the water. Whether the shore suits your group is weighed in our answer on whether Craigleith is a good area to stay.

The Blue Mountain resort base, across from Monterra Golf

Inland from the shore, at the foot of the ski hill, is the resort base. Eight Blue View chalets stand side by side at 104 Brooker Boulevard, across from Monterra Golf and a 10-minute walk from Blue Mountain Village, with 39 bedrooms between them and room for up to 104 guests across all eight. Each sleeps 10 to 14 and has its own hot tub, and the eight share a heated outdoor pool from May to mid-September. The 44L, a 1950s chalet in Tyrolean Village, is a 5-minute drive from the resort.

If you searched for places to stay in "Collingwood village", the village you have in mind is probably Blue Mountain Village, which sits in The Blue Mountains rather than in Collingwood; our answer on what town Blue Mountain is in untangles the names. The resort base is the area for ski weekends, for Village evenings without a car, and for groups too large for one house, since adjacent chalets can be booked together when the dates are free.

Thornbury, Clarksburg and the west shore beyond Collingwood

Further west along the bay, Thornbury is about 17 minutes (14.9 km) from 104 Brooker Boulevard, with its harbour, the fishway on the Beaver River and a small downtown of restaurants and galleries. Clarksburg, just inland, is about 20 minutes. Blue View has no house in either, so a group that wants Thornbury evenings drives west from Aqua Villa or the cluster; the chalets near Thornbury page sets out those drives.

To the east, Wasaga Beach is about 39 minutes (31.7 km) from the cluster, which makes it a beach day out rather than a base for a Collingwood trip. South of town, Nottawa is about 18 minutes and Duntroon about 25, both on the way to the escarpment's hiking country.

Choosing where to stay in Collingwood by the reason for the trip

  • A ski weekend: the resort base, where a 10-minute walk to the Village replaces the parking lot.
  • A beach week: the Craigleith shore and Aqua Villa, with Northwinds Beach on foot.
  • A hockey, ringette or swim weekend: either base; Collingwood's arenas and pool are about 15 minutes from the cluster.
  • A wedding: choose by venue. The Georgian Bay Hotel is about 10 minutes from the cluster, and venues in Blue Mountain Village are inside the 10-minute walk.
  • A food-and-town weekend: downtown is about 15 minutes from any Blue View chalet, so plan a driver and book tables ahead.
  • A group larger than 14: the resort base, where two or more neighbouring chalets give each family its own front door.

Booking a Blue View chalet for a Collingwood-area stay

All ten chalets sleep 10 to 14 and come with a private year-round hot tub, a full kitchen, linens and towels, and parking for four vehicles. The minimum stay is two nights, with check-in at 4 p.m. and checkout at 11 a.m. Every chalet takes a dog, with a pet fee and one dog as the standard. Only registered overnight guests may be on the property, and the hot tubs run from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. under the Town's licence conditions for short-term rentals. Each chalet's live calendar is on its own listing at booking.blueviewchalets.com, and any chalets can be booked together when their dates are free.
