Matching the book club to a chalet by who will share a bed

A book club is usually friends rather than couples, so the first question is how many members will share a queen. The answer decides the chalet more than the headcount does. Read the table, then reserve on that chalet’s calendar, such as Stella’s; the chalet pages, like Stella, have the photographs.

ChaletLicensed sleepsSeparate beds if nobody shares
Vista108: two queens, four bunk positions, two singles
44L107: three queens, four bunk positions
Aqua Villa105: three queens, two singles; confirm the beds for guests nine and ten
Stella128: three queens, a bunk room, a twin room
Corona149: three queens, two bunk rooms

The bunk positions mean ladders, and the double lower bunks count once unless two members agree to share.

The book club discussion: fireplace, table and hot tub

The discussion needs one room where everyone can see each other. In the cluster chalets that is the open upper floor, with the living area, a gas fireplace and a dining table that seats ten at Stella and Corona. Corona and Luna each list two gas fireplaces, which gives a club of fourteen two places to settle. Aqua Villa’s lounge and dining area run along broad windows on Georgian Bay, with dining for eight. After the meeting the hot tub takes over; every chalet has a private one, open year-round. A member who wants to read by the pool can use it May to mid-September, shared with the other cluster guests.

A Saturday in Thornbury for the book club

Thornbury is about 20 minutes from the cluster and makes a walkable day out for a club. The Gallery at L.E. Shore is inside the town library, a single exhibition room with changing shows; call ahead. Bruce Wine Bar asks parties of six or more to contact it directly, and its upper dining room is up a flight of stairs. The Cheese Gallery needs at least 24 hours’ notice for a prepared board, which is worth ordering for the discussion night. Thornbury Bakery Café takes custom cake inquiries if the club is marking an anniversary. On a wet day, the Historic Gayety Theatre in Collingwood, 15 minutes away, programmes concerts and live theatre. Name a driver for any stop that pours wine.

Booking the book club’s chalet and splitting the cost

One member books, pays in full at reservation and holds the card on which the security deposit is authorized at check-in; it is not charged unless there is damage or a policy breach. How the club divides the bill is covered in splitting the chalet payment between guests. The minimum stay is two nights, from 4:00 pm on arrival day to 11:00 am on the last morning. Members who live nearby still need to be registered guests to come to the chalet, because day visitors are not permitted. For the menu and the weekend’s timetable, see the book club weekend guide.

Book club weekends: frequently asked questions

Which chalet suits a book club of ten where nobody shares a bed?

No single chalet has ten separate beds; the most is nine, at Omega, Vega, Corona, Luna and Prima. A club of ten either has one pair share or books two smaller chalets.

In some rooms. Vista’s and Stella’s twin rooms have two single beds without ladders; the other lower-level rooms are bunk rooms.

Can members who live locally join just for the discussion?

No. Only registered overnight guests are permitted on the property.

Which book club chalet has the most bathrooms?

Aqua Villa, with four for up to ten guests. The cluster chalets have three each and 44L has two.
