Dates for the coming season

The Owen Sound Emancipation Festival marks the British Commonwealth Emancipation Act of August 1, 1834, and has gathered in Owen Sound over the Civic Holiday weekend since 1862. The 164th festival in 2026 ran from a Friday-evening Speaker’s Corner at Grey Roots Museum & Archives to the Saturday Freedom Walk and picnic in Harrison Park and an Inspirational Sunday at the British Methodist Episcopal Church. Families travelling in can base the long weekend at a chalet about an hour away.

The Emancipation Festival weekend, event by event

Families who come back to Owen Sound for the festival can hold a Civic Holiday weekend chalet for the whole long weekend. The festival’s 2026 release set out the program:

  • Friday, July 31: Speaker’s Corner at Grey Roots Museum & Archives, 6 to 9:30 p.m., with guest speakers, live music and refreshments.
  • Saturday, August 1: the Freedom Walk leaving Grey Roots at 8:30 a.m., then the Emancipation Festival and Picnic in Harrison Park from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with an opening ceremony at the Black History Cairn at 11:30 a.m., live music, vendors and information booths.
  • Sunday, August 2: Inspirational Sunday at the British Methodist Episcopal Church of Owen Sound, noon to 3 p.m.

Housing an extended family for the Owen Sound festival

The festival describes itself as a time to share memories with family and keep the picnic tradition going, which often means several households travelling together. Side-by-side chalets let each branch keep its own kitchen and bedrooms; the eight Brooker chalets hold up to 104 guests between them, and our multigenerational chalet page helps divide a large family.

Day visitors are not permitted, so everyone sleeping over must be on the booking. Early August is pool season at 104 Brooker, and the propane barbecue suits a family dinner after the picnic.

Owen Sound drive times and a Clarksburg stop

Our drive-time check puts Owen Sound City Hall about 62 minutes from 104 Brooker Boulevard, before traffic and stops. Walkers joining the 8:30 a.m. Freedom Walk should leave the chalet by about 7:15.

Closer to the chalets, the Sheffield Park Black History Museum in Clarksburg is about 20 minutes away; check its hours on our place page before going. Owen Sound’s Summerfolk festival follows later in August for families who want a second trip.
