Sailing & Boat Charters on Georgian Bay

By the Blue View Chalets Team · Published: August 19, 2026 · 7 min read

From the top of Blue Mountain, Georgian Bay looks like an ocean — and the correct response to that view is to get out on it. Southern Georgian Bay has a real working boat scene: tour boats and private charters out of Collingwood Harbour, a marina town at Thornbury, and rental options that put your group on the water for an afternoon without anyone owning so much as an anchor.

Cruises and Tour Boats from Collingwood

The easiest water time is a scheduled cruise from Collingwood Harbour. The harbour's tour operations include a proper passenger tour boat — Collingwood Charters runs the 65-foot Huronic, seating dozens of guests for sightseeing and sunset cruises as well as private events — and small-group operators such as Collingwood Adventure Voyages, whose seasonal lineup (roughly May through October) includes sunset runs plus genuinely local specialties: shipwreck tours and lighthouse tours along a shoreline with serious maritime history. Collingwood built ships for a century; seeing the town from the water completes the story its downtown guide starts.

Sunset departures are the ones that sell out — Georgian Bay's west-facing evening light is the region's best free spectacle, as our stargazing guide and every waterfront patio can confirm.

Private Charters and Rentals

Groups that want the boat to themselves have two honest paths:

  • Captained private charters — fishing-and-cruise operators out of Collingwood Harbour (some running for decades) will configure trips around your group: part fishing, part swimming stop, part cruise. You bring snacks and sunscreen; they bring the licence, the boat, and the local knowledge. Our Georgian Bay fishing guide covers the rod-focused version.
  • Peer-to-peer rentals — the boat-sharing platforms list pontoons, bowriders, and sailboats around Collingwood and Thornbury, both captained and (for qualified operators) self-drive. Ontario requires a Pleasure Craft Operator Card to drive a powerboat yourself, so unlicensed groups should book captained listings.

Sailors specifically will find the bay a legitimate destination — steady wind, big water, and Thornbury Harbour a pleasant 15-minute hop west of the chalets with a pier worth an evening stroll whether or not you sail; the town around it is covered in our Thornbury guide.

Paddle-Power Postscript

If your definition of boating starts with a paddle, the bay is equally generous — launches, rentals, and route advice live in our kayaking and paddleboarding guide.

The Shore Base

Boat days bracket beautifully around a chalet stay: morning cruise, Village afternoon, BBQ dinner on the chalet deck retelling the shipwreck stories. The waterfront Aqua Villa is the obvious pick for water-first groups — Georgian Bay is effectively the backyard — while the Mountain cluster keeps bigger groups of 10 to 14 per chalet within a 10-minute drive of Collingwood Harbour's departures. Either way the evening ends the same correct way: private hot tub, bay stories, repeat tomorrow.
