Where a photography retreat shoots from the chalets

A photography group books for the light, so this page leads with locations. Base the club at Aqua Villa for the bay at the door, or at Omega for a dining table that seats ten editors, and reserve on Aqua Villa’s calendar or Omega’s. Times below are the verified drive from the cluster at 104 Brooker Boulevard, before stops.

  • Shale shoreline: Craigleith Provincial Park and Delphi Point Park, about 10 minutes.
  • Harbours: Collingwood Harbour, 15 minutes; Thornbury Harbour and Sunset Point Park in Collingwood, 20.
  • Moving water: the Thornbury Fishway, 20 minutes, where the Town describes salmon broadly from late August to late October and rainbow trout around April.
  • Escarpment: the cliffs and crevices of Petun Conservation Area, 15 minutes; Nottawasaga Lookout, 30; Epping–John Muir Lookout, 35; Old Baldy, 40; Irish Mountain Lookout, 45.
  • Falls: Eugenia Falls, 45 minutes, photographed only from the designated viewing areas.

Sleeping after sunrise on a photography retreat

Golden-hour trips run on broken nights. Room-darkening shades are listed at Vista, Omega, Vega, Luna, Prima, 44L and Aqua Villa, which matters to the half of the group that went out at dawn and wants two hours back after breakfast. Aqua Villa’s own description lists sunrise and sunset views over Georgian Bay from a villa with a bay-facing hot tub, so its dawn shoot can start on the balcony. In the cluster, the balconies look at the ski hill and the golf course.

Plan the cars before the shots. Each chalet allows four vehicles and a fifth forfeits part of the security deposit, so a club of twelve splits into a sunrise car, a sunset car and one held back for the late risers. For winter starts on escarpment roads, read the snow squall driving guide before the alarm goes off.

Editing nights for the photography retreat group

The other half of the trip happens indoors. Every chalet has free Wi-Fi and a Smart TV, and the cluster homes put the kitchen, dining table and living room together on the upper floor, which is where the laptops come out after dinner. Omega, Corona, Stella, Luna and Prima each list dining for ten and Aurora seating for ten, enough for a critique round with everyone at the table; Aqua Villa’s table seats eight. Whether the television takes a laptop feed for a slideshow is not documented, so bring a cable plan and ask. Night-sky photographers can read stargazing near Blue Mountain, and the photography weekend guide covers seasons and subjects in more depth than this booking page.

Booking a photography retreat for six to twenty-six

Up to ten photographers fit Aqua Villa or Vista; twelve to fourteen fit one five-bedroom cluster chalet; a workshop of twenty-plus takes two side by side, such as Omega and Vega for up to 26, both with room-darkening shades. Check-in at 4:00 pm leaves time for a first sunset on the shore, and check-out at 11:00 am comes after the last sunrise. A workshop leader who is not staying cannot meet the group at the chalet for a day session, because day visitors are not permitted; meet at the location instead, or register the instructor as a guest. The two-night minimum suits a programme of two sunsets and two sunrises.

Photography retreats: frequently asked questions

Which photography retreat chalet faces Georgian Bay?

Aqua Villa, on the waterfront at 209555 Highway 26, a 5-minute drive from Blue Mountain Village. Its description lists sunrise and sunset views and a hot tub on the bay-facing balcony.

How far is Eugenia Falls from the chalets for a photography group?

About 45 minutes by road from 104 Brooker Boulevard. Viewing is restricted to designated areas; the base and the top of the falls are off limits.

Can our workshop instructor come for one day only?

Not to the chalet. Only registered overnight guests may be on the property, so meet a day instructor at the shooting location or book them a bed.

Which photography chalets have room-darkening shades?

Vista, Omega, Vega, Luna, Prima, 44L and Aqua Villa list them in their amenities.

When can a photography group see salmon at the Thornbury Fishway?

The Town describes salmon activity broadly from late August to late October. Fish timing varies naturally, so treat it as a chance rather than a schedule.
