December is a month with a plot. It opens quietly — snow guns working, first runs opening, the Village stringing lights — and closes at the absolute peak of the year, with Christmas and New Year's week the most requested stretch on every accommodation calendar in the region. Where your stay falls inside that arc changes everything about it.
Early December: the soft open
The season's start is a build, not a switch: terrain opens progressively as snowmaking and weather allow, typically through late November and December, with the year-to-year pattern covered in our season-dates guide. Early-December stays trade guaranteed full-mountain skiing for real advantages: festive atmosphere without festive crowds, easy availability, shoulder-adjacent value, and first-tracks energy as each new run drops. The Village in early December — lights on, fresh snow, no queue for hot chocolate — is one of the year's underrated scenes.
The festive middle
By mid-month the machine is humming: more terrain, night skiing under the lights, skating-rink-and-mitten weather, and a Village in full holiday dress. This is the sweet spot for groups who want December's atmosphere but cannot (or wisely do not want to) travel during the holiday itself — the last school week before the break is particularly gentle.
The holiday peak
From Christmas through New Year's, everything said in our Christmas rentals and New Year's rentals pages applies: the year's highest demand, longer minimum stays, and booking windows that reward groups who committed in the fall. The chalet holiday works because the properties were built for it — full kitchens for the big dinners, 39 bedrooms across the eight cluster chalets for multi-family gatherings, and the walkable NYE finish.
December practicalities
Darkness comes early — plan around 4:30 pm sunsets, and treat night skiing and hot-tub evenings as features of that, not bugs. Weather can serve anything from green lawns to a lake-effect dump; our snow-squall guide is worth a read before any December drive up. And the dog can absolutely come — every chalet is pet-friendly, and a snowy December field is peak dog happiness.
Booking the arc
Early December: relaxed, bookable, quietly excellent. Mid-December: firming up, still fair. The holiday fortnight: book the moment your group's dates are fixed — it is the one stretch of the year where waiting reliably costs you the chalet you wanted. All ten calendars are live on the booking page.
